The style and sound is completely different from St.Anger and the guitar solos seems to be back with full force as well. The couple of riffs featured in these previews seemed to have more of a black album vibe to them and not so much Master of Puppets like rumored. One things for sure though, Metallica really got me going now! I think the new album will be awesome!
While we're waiting for new stuff here's the preview featured on Mission Metallica!
What do you think? Concerning the album title, I'm starting to think the album title might actually be "Mission Metallica". Still no word on the title or release date that was rumored to be announced may 10th. I would think if those rumors were indeed true, Metallica would have placed these announcements in the news section on their official website like they do with anything else. Anyway, the Mission Metallica website is now ready, something that makes this blog obsolete when it comes to updates on the new album. I will therefore focus more on finding Metallica interviews, news, and stories and gather it all here in one convenient blog in the coming weeks and months. Check out Mission Metallica!!

Here's a preview/trailer from Mission Metallica, at the very end of this video you'll hear some NEW RIFFS!

Metallica To Announce Title Of New Album Today

Metallica will announce the title of the new album today, May 10th. They will also reveal the release date of the album. Speculations on the title of the new album has been all over the web the last few months but today we will finally get the official title as well as the official release date. I'm excited! Suggested album titles includes "Back to fire", "Blood Brothers" and "Defenders of the faith". Of course these titles are nothing but speculations and free fantasy from eager fans and are not likely to be for real. I for one will only put my faith in official announcements from the band.

In addition to giving us the name of the new album Metallica will launch the website Mission Metallica on may 12th giving us updates and hopefully soundclips and previews from the upcoming album. This post will be followed up by updates concerning the new album title as soon as this is announced by Metallica. We will now finally have a title and a release date to look forward to and this raises expectations and makes it easier to stay updated while waiting for the release. Metallica has also announced additional US concert dates before they go off on the European vacation tour. Dates and locations as well as information on where to get tickets are announced on Metallica's official website. I'll be back with the album title and an early review as soon as possible.

Metallica - best live performances

Here's a few videos of what I consider to be some of Metallica's greatest live performances captured on tape.

First out "For Whom the Bell tolls" with Cliff Burtons frantic bass solo from Day on the green August 1985

Next up is "Fade to Black" played live in Seattle 1989. This is in my opinion the best Live version of this song caugth on tape, however because of the nostalgic value this song can't be redone any better than this. The band has set up this web site as a promotion tool for the upcoming album. Mission Metallica promises to give fans the opportunity to "experience the new album before it's done". Lars Ulrich has prevously announced that Metallica's follow-up to St. Anger will be released September 2008 (Uncomfirmed rumors has it that the actual date will be september 9th 2008) which may turn out to be accurate ,at least to the month, since the tour and promotion of the album is now up and running . Metallica has been recording this yet untitled album in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin and are doing all things a bit differently this time, which can only be a good thing. Ironically, the last few years has seemed more like "mission impossible" than "mission metallica" to all the fans waiting for the new album, but finally things are starting to happen so get on your mission and head over to mission metallica to sign up for the e-mail alerts and be the first to get your filthy hands on the bits and pieces of the coming record that will be featured on this site!!

Metallica considering self release model on future albums

Metallica are playing with the thought of employing the methods of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails through self releasing material on future albums.

Drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone magazine that he would hate to go the way of Madonna and U2 by signing up for lucrative deals with Live Nation. He says the band would rather like to keep things in their own hands.

When asked about signing a "360 deal" like Madonna has done, Ulrich says: "We've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a player as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet."

However, Ulrich expresses a nostalgic sadness to the fact that the traditional record shop model seems to be disappearing, "The record store has been such a huge part of our lives. When I was 12, 14 years old in Denmark, the record store was the Holy Grail and the guy who worked there was my hero."

Metallicas ninth studio album will be the last record to be released through Warner Bros Music Group. The albums official release date will supposedly also be announced and the date in question is said to be September 9th 2008 however this is in no way confirmed. The ninth album to be released on the ninth day in the ninth month of the year! makes sense doesn't it? That makes 999, turn that upside down what do you get? That's right! The number of the beast! This album is evil! There are to many good reasons for this to be true. So finally there you have it, the official release date for Metallicas ninth album is september 9th 2008.

Where to get Metallica tickets

Buying concert tickets online may be a dubious affair if not done correctly. However, if a few basic guidelines are followed it should be a safe and convenient way to get tickets. There are numerous websites out there that trade tickets for just about anything. Things to keep in mind however are hidden costs and shipping fees. Always read the fine print, also make sure you know exactly where your seat is or what section of the concert venue your ticket is valid for. If applicable check the serial number of your ticket, if the ticket has no number it is obviously fake. People are often in a hurry when purchasing concert tickets and some vendors use this to their advantage. In general be aware and be critical.

Online Ticket marketplaces to consider:

StubHub
Online ticket Marketplace (e-bay style but exclusive for tickets)

E-bay
Concert tickets also go for sale on e-bay, sometimes at very good prices (depending on the show)

TicketLiquidator
Discount tickets for everything from sporting events to rock concerts

Ticketfinder
Trusted online ticket vendor

For European tickets:

Euroteam
allows you to book tickets in several european countries

Viagogo
Marketplace for tickets in the UK

World ticket shop
Offers Metallica tickets for most european shows

For last minute ticket purchases also check out

Soldouteventtickets.com

There are tons of other place you can buy tickets online. While I would be hestitant to use the open e-bay style open marketplace solutions as my first choice it is still an option that might give you some good delas and most people are actually honest. However, I would first try to get my tickets at one of the major sites that's been around for years , like Ticketfinder and Euroteam. For more info on how to avoid the scams check out the tickets scam resource center and safe from scams. Here is a guide for safe purchase of tickets on e-bay .

Finally, I repeat, you should get your metallica tickets for the 2008 european tour NOW! Song titles like "Trashed" "Devour" and "Throne of ivory" are among the many mp3 titles offered on these sites, posing as metallica's new album. This is NOT metallica it's actually a band called Eternal decision and they SUCK, so don't download! What pisses me off is that these sites even try to make you pay a measly 15 cents for each song! There must be better and more effective ways of making money online without pulling peoples leg! The funny thing is all the song titles are there but the album title just says Metallica's new album 2008. What a bunch of wankers! They made up all the song titles, or swiped them from Eternal decision but didn't even bother to make up an album title. Who would pay for an obviously fake album at a torrent site when the real album coming out months from now will have to be paid for anyway? If it were offered for free it would have been a different story. Pay 99 cents pr song for the real thing or 15 cents pr song for a fake album not even nearly associated with metallica. The choice is easy! Ah Well, the people who fall for this one deserves to lose their hard earned pocket change! Metallica's new album will probably be available for free on various torrent sites as soon as its released anyway, but I for one WILL PAY for this album.

Get your Metallica Concert tickets for the 2008 tour NOW

Metallica goes off on their official european tour in summer 2008. The last album with any mentionable guitar soloing going on was probably "The Black Album" , although there are a few good solos on the load albums these are very different from what I associate metallica guitar solos with. Kirk Hammett's beautiful blend of melody and shred is something I have been missing for the last 15 years, his sound has evolved more into melodic and repetitive riff based solos as opposed to the more symphonic and complex solos on the early albums. Kirk Hammett has revealed news about guitar solos playing a major part on the coming album though. In an interview with the swedish guitar mag Fuzz he had this to say about the new album

"The next album will be a lot more riff based then St. Anger. It will be more dynamic and have a lot of guitar solos. One of the songs have so many changes that it feels like a long solo."

Good news for all guitarists out there, being a guitarist myself I always found great inspiration in Kirks solo work. Actually he was the main reason I picked up an electric guitar, I was so blown away by the opening solo in Fade to Black, I just had to learn how to play like that! On acoustic guitar Nothing else matters was also the first song I ever learned to play so Metallica and Kirk Hammett has meant a lot to me as a guitarist and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

"Compared with St Anger, this album is a lot more riffy, a lot more dynamic, a lot tighter in arragement, less repetative and a lot more to the point. It's more 'traditional Metallica'. There are more guitar solos on it; one song cycles through so many changes it feel like I'm soloing for a full minute"

Kirk Hammett in an interview with Total Guitar Magazine

To me this is very promising news for the new album. It seems Kirk and company might finally be heading back to their roots after doing a huge detour.

Old Metallica albums re-released on vinyl

Good news for all the vinyl freaks out there! Perhaps as a treat for the fans while waiting for the new album to be released later this year, Metallica has announced a re-release of old albums on vinyl on their official website. "Kill em all" and "Ride the lightning" should be available on vinyl April 15. The new vinyl releases will be available in two formats, 33 1/3 the other a 180 gram vinyl, 45 rpm package all in a double gatefold. Master of Puppets and Justice for all will be available in June. The records will only be available in Metallica's online store on the bands official website.

Here's the full announcement from Metallica's website:

"While we're finishing up the new album, we told the dudes at the record company we thought it might be cool to dust off the old tapes and get all retro with some vinyl re-releases... First up are the first two albums (duh!?), "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning", coming out on April 15 in North America and pretty fucking close to that in the rest of the world.

There will be two versions...one like the original on a single disc spinning at 33 1/3, the other a two disc, 180 gram vinyl, 45 rpm package all in a double gatefold. The music was half speed mastered from the original analog tapes at Mobile Fidelity to bring you audiophile quality.

Both versions will be available in the online store here and over at Met Club. Oh, and in case you were wondering, "Master" and "Justice" will obviously be next and should be coming out on vinyl in June."

The new Metallica album not delayed after all

The release of the new Metallica album has been stated to be delayed until September 2008 by Stereowarning.com and various other sources on the web. This was however quickly denied by Metallica's management due to the simple fact that an album without a set release date logically cannot be delayed. The news about the albums delay has been based on rumours and speculations and hints given by Metallica members and others in various interviews. That said, fans have been waiting a long time for the new metallica album and there has obviously been internal delays ,however, no official delays has been reported. Anyway, waiting 5 years for an album when many of the songs are already on paper can best be described as one big delay. James Hetfield stated that the band had 18 new songs that needed to be reworked but where all possible inclusions on the next album, he said this as early as 2004.

But Metallica has also been writing new material since then. The songwriting and recording process is different this time and more similar to Metallica's old style of working, something that is making the process more time consuming, but hopefully will improve the end product. In the meantime they also gave us the "Sick of the studio" tour. According to an interview with Lars Ulrich,Rick Rubin doesn't want the band to start the actual recording process until every song is as close to 100% as possible. On February 9, 2007, Metallica confirmed on their official website that despite having only nearly finished pre-production and failing to begin the recording process in January 2007, the band would begin recording the album on March 12, 2007. This deadline was met. That means the actual recording of the new album has only been going on for about a year and that the previous 3 years was spent writing songs, something that could be a good indicator of the quality of the material for the new album. The album is therefore not offically delayed as the gossip would suggest it is simply work in progress. Like any process there will be internal delays and details to assess and reassess before everything is ready for release. I'm sure Metallica as the professionals they are would never announce a release date for the new album unless this is 100% certain and confirmed by all involved parties. My advice would be to simply ignore all the rumours until we get a clear message directly from the band itself, either through a press release or announced on Metallica's official website.
The gossip concerning the release in september 2008 stems from a recent interview with Lars Ulrich on BBC radio where he stated that the GOAL was to get the album ready for release in September this year and that the band only had six weeks left in the studio, however this has not been officially confirmed.

Here's Metallica in the studio with Rick Rubin
as you can see they are working extremely hard on finishing the new album.

The new Metallica album release date and news

Apocalyptica plays Metallica on Cello

Apocalyptica is a band consisting of 4 classically trained cellists from Finland, and since 2005, also a drummer. Their music features elements from cello metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal and symphonic metal. Apocalyptica was formed in 1993 when the four cellists, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen gathered to play Metallica covers at the Teatro Heavy Metal Club. In the audience was several representatives from Zen Garden records, which decided to sign a deal with these talented musicians.

In 1996, Apocalyptica released their debut album, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, which consisted exclusively of Metallica covers played on cellos. In 1998, the band released their second studio album, Inquisition Symphony, this album also contained covers of Metallica, but in addition they included covers of Faith No More, Sepultura, and Pantera. For this album the band also decided to include three original songs written by Eicca Toppinen.

To date Apocalyptica has released six studio albums featuring cellos mixed with metal music.
Apocalyptica have announced a large world tour for 2008, including tour dates in Europe, North America and Mexico. Throughout their career they have sold over 2 million albums.

Apocalyptica is most famous for covering Metallica on cello and this is what initially lead to their commercial breakthrough, if you're a Metallica fan and you never heard of them you should definetely check them out. Strangely enough Metallica's music fits very well in a classically oriented soundscape and particularly that created by four cellists. You would think four cello's wouldn't be able to produce anything heavy, and that their sound would be all mellow and warm. Well it is indeed mellow and warm but these guys can ROCK if they need to! It's incredible how heavy four cellos can actually sound. One of the highlights of their first albm would have to be the Fade to black cover as well as their cover of Nothing else matters, these 2 tunes just sounds amazing when played on cello. Cellos are able to produce such dark and moody sound, which is perfect for these 2 songs. If you haven't checked them out yet, you should, it will give you something to listen to while waiting for the new Metallica album.

Here's Apocalyptica performing ONE by Metallica

New Album - song titles

There's a good few rumours out there concerning song titles for the upcoming Metallica album. In an interview with "Examiner" Lars Ulrich mentioned a few titles that had been thrown out there.

Quote:

“There’s one called ‘19′, ‘10′, ‘German Soup’, ‘Glass Cow’, and even ‘Black Squirrel’. Just names that relate to where the idea came from, like Glasgow, Scotland became ‘Glass Cow’. And when we don’t have anything clever to call it, we just call it a number. They’re just silly working titles.”

Some people have been taking this seriously and obviously wonder what the f**k is going on with Metallica. However, like Lars is saying, they are just silly working titles to yet untitled songs. Although it gets you thinking, what could possibly sound more METAL then "Glass cow" or "German soup"? Anyway, instead of annoying ourselves with cheesy song titles, here are two songs from the upcoming album we can be absolutely confident is Metallica. Here's "Death is not the end" and "Vulturous". These are good songs and good titles!

While on the topic of fake songtitles and songs, I was searching the web for leaked demo's from the new album the other day and came across a soundclip that I was absolutely 100% sure had to be Metallica. The song was rather good too, and there was no doubt in my mind that this was actually James Hetfield singing and that he had gone back to his previous vocal style instead of the ranting he has had going on for the last 10 years. I was extremely excited! Is this what Metallica has in store for us?? The song was along the lines of "The Unforgiven" with rapid changes between mellowness and hardness and I liked it better every time I listened to it. I later found out this was actually not Metallica at all but a band called Am I Blood, I was naturally disappointed, not in the song, but for inducing myself with false hope during my manic search for leaked material. Anyway, here's the song so you can judge for yourself....

If that doesn't sound like James Hetfield I'm Kirk Hammett!!

This song is actually performed by a band called "Am I Blood" and the song is called "Gone with you" from the album "The Truth Inside the Dying Sun". This band is definetely worth a listen!

Brief History of Metallica

Metallica came to life in Los Angeles in 1981 after drummer Lars Ulrich placed an ad in the local newspaper looking for someone to form a Metal Band. This is how he met James Hetfield. In the beginning the Band consisted of Lars Ulrich,James Hetfield , Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) and Ron McGovney. Before their first album release Kill 'em All in 1983, Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney had been replaced with Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton. Metallica eventually moved to San fransisco, this was Cliff Burton's condition for joining the band. If they wnated him to play they had to move, and so they did.

The news about Metallica spread rapidly in the San Fransisco Bay area, first and foremost by word of mouth and various bootleg tapes that where circulating. Radio's wouldn't play their music in the beginning.

in 1984 they released Ride the lightning and with this album their music really started to go worldwide.

The album Master of Puppets was considered by many to be Metallica's best album to date. Master of Puppets was released in 1986 and soon after the release Metallica embarked on an extensive world tour. Touring non-stop for months. Just as Metallica was about to become one of the biggest names on the trash metal scene tragedy struck. On September 26 1986, the band's tour bus skid on an ice patch in the road and flipped on its side somewhere in the southern parts of sweden . Bassist Cliff Burton was killed getting pinned under the weight of the bus.

After a break, mourning the loss of Cliff and contemplating Metallica's future, Jason Newsted was eventually chosen to replace Burton. The next album ,...and justice for all, showed the band going in a slightly different direction. This album was the one that made Metallica kings of the trash metal genre.

in 1991 the Metallica sound took a huge turn towards the mainstream. Commercially speaking The Black album was the highlight of Metallica's career until now as the album sales would skyrocket. The Black album is Metallica's breakthrough album and is responsible for earning them global domination. Many fans started to bitch about Metallica selling out already on this, personally I don't think they ever sold out, altough I didn't really start to dislike theri style until the Load albums came out and it only went down from there. I respect them for making the choices they did, and the albums from load and onwards are technically well produced but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Ulrich and Hetfield always had their conflicts ,as they ar both strong personalities with strong opinions about what Metallica should be, and their conflicts escalated as the years went on. James Hetfield always had a problem with alcohol and this problem went to a critical point in 2004 when he had to go into rehab for his alcohol problems. And eventually the whole band had to go into therapy to make it work. This is also the period when Jason Newsted decided to leave the band, he was replaced by former bassist for Black Label Society and Ozzy Osbourne Robert Trujillo.

The result of the band's most turbulent period was the album St.anger. An album that does need therapy! The sound reflected the fact that the band was actually in need of therapy. This album is definetely "the thing that should not be" when it comes to Metallica. It's definetely the rock bottom of Metallica's career, but you can only be ressurrected after you've fallen, The next album will mark Metallica's ressurection and I'm looking forward to it! Every band has its down period but hopefully the metal legends are now back on track.

Song from the upcoming album?

This may or may not be a demo of a song from the upcoming album. It's hard to tell, if it is a fake the singer does a great job at emulating Hetfields voice! Although it's more like his voice the way it sounded 20 years ago. The sound quality is not the best but allright for a demo. Anyway, it's actually a descent song and if the new album sounds anything like this we might have another classic Metallica album on our hands. My ears might not be properly tuned though, any opinions on wether or not this is actually Hetfield singing?

Kirk Hammett on the new album

In a recent interview Kirk Hammett talks about the upcoming album

Quote: "The next album will be a lot more riff based then St. Anger. It will be more dynamic and have a lot of guitar solos. One of the songs have so many changes that it feels like a long solo".

About new producer Rick Rubin he has this to say

Quote: "We had to do something new. We met Rick for the first time in 1986 when he came backstage with a demo of the new Slayer album, "Reign in blood". I remember thinking that this was some of the best I had ever heard."

About the song-writing process Hammett says:

Quote:"The songs have been written in the same way as we did the St. Anger album. We jam in the studio and make the songs together. We also recorded 50 hours of jams while we were touring and these have made the bits and pieces of the new album. The lyrics came later and this time James is dealing with them alone again."

In previous interviews Hammett has referred to the new album as "the best we've done in fifteen years" which makes my expectations rise even higher. I can only imagine Kirk's fingers is just itching to finally do some soloing again. Kirks strongest point as guitarist has always been the solo's while James is the virtuoso rythm guitarist. I hope the new album will bring out the best in them both with regards to their guitar playing skills. I'll finish this post with a promising quote from Kirk Hammett and an interview regarding the new album as well as a video with Kirk churning out some good old riffs.

Quote: " This time we’re not afraid to refer to our past music in order to create future music"

James Hetfield - on the new album

In these interviews James Hetfield explains the creative process involved in the making of the new album . He worries they've been "thinking too much". They've been thinking too much about making a sequel to Master of Puppets and so on, however he emphasises the need for the creative process to come naturally. He also talks about the relationship to new producer Rick Rubin, and how he is a lot lees involved in the process than previous producers. Personally, I think St. anger was too thought out and too streamlined and mechanical sounding. Let's hope they've learned a lesson with St.anger and that Metallica's new album will sound, if not like Master of puppets at least very different from St.anger. The rumours surrounding the new album seems promising though. Let's cross our fingers!

Metallica's new album - release dates and news

Metallica's upcoming 9th studio album are scheduled to be released in september 2008. This album will be Metallica's first studio album to feature new bassplayer Robert Trujillo considering that St. anger was not really a studio album. Another first is that the album is produced by Rick Rubin former producer for Guns n roses among others.
The new album is said to have a more progressive and melodic style compared to the previous St.anger album. The new album should include a few guitar solo's as well. This album will be Metallica's first studio release since the album St.anger in 2003.

The title for metallica's new album is yet to be released. Rick Rubin has however decided that the new album should be "the new" Master of puppets. Many fans will definetely welcome the promise of more guitar solo's on Metallica's new album. The upcoming release is said to feature a lot more solo's then what was the case on the previous album St.anger. Something that should be easily achieved since the solo's on St.anger seem to have been clinically removed from the final mix. Nevertheless it sounds promising.

Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich made an interview with Revolver magazine about the band's 9th studio album due to be released in september 2008. Ulrich told revolver magazine that metallica's new material is "certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," adding, "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes".

Ulrich also mentioned that the album has more in common with albums like Master of puppets and "And Justice for all" than the last three previous releases . Metallica has officially dismissed rumours that Alice in Chains bassplayer Mike Inez would participate in the recording of the new album.

There has been word out that the album has gone through several delays. The album is actually not delayed since no release date has ever been set, but it has been announced that it was originally set to be released in february 2008, this rumour turned out to be false. Fans may take comfort in the fact that the last time Metallica spent similar amounts of time in the studio was in 1991 working on "the Black Album”. Lets hope the new album will be of equal quality, both production wise and with regards to song writing.

The exact release date for the new Metallica album is yet to be decided, Metallica has booked a number of European tour dates for June and July. However, as the album is said to be released in September this might turn out to be incorrect. This is after all following several delays of previous release dates. As mentioned the new album was set to be released in february 2008. However, this has now officially been postponed to September 2008.

One things for sure! There are hords of fans out there eagerly awaiting Metallica's new upcoming album.

"I like what I’ve heard so far I’m not one of the great sellers of the new record’s the best thing we’ve ever done and it shits all over the last record and it’s way heavier,’”

Lars Ulrich said in an interview with BBC6 radio. This sounds promising, above all for the old school Metallica fans. If the new album is anything close to Master of puppets it won't be hard to decide wether to purchase the new CD or not. However, no album coming from Metallica in the last ten years has been anywere close to Master of puppets. Every time Metallica release a new album the expectations are sky high, and the last ten years they haven't lived up to these expectations, Lets hope it will be different with Metallica's upcoming album. Apparently it has been announced several places across the internet that Metallica now have six weeks to complete the new album if they want to get it released by September 2008. For those who can't wait until September a few demo songs has leaked out on various torrent sites and even on youtube, providing an early taste of Metallica's new record.

Lars Ulrich said this about the upcoming tour in an interview with Kerrang magazine:

"We're certainly planning on rolling out some of the new songs for the first time, but right now our focus is on finishing the record. As soon as that's out of the way, we'll be hitting the rehearsal room and getting to grips with playing these bastards live!"

Let's hope the boys in metallica will keep their deadline this time and serve us the new metallica album on scheduled time. And above all, let's hope the new album ROCKS!!
